Holiday Hair How-To

Let’s hear it for the gals who are so sick of hearing about “top knots”, and are in need of a little “Bridget Bardot”. It’s high-time we bring back a soft look for good girls who have a party or two to attend.

Try our version of a half-up style that is easy to do, and addicting for all hair types and lengths. It’s so wildly popular this season that even Lucky Magazine sent out their own version.

We’ve put together an M Salon how-to video for all of our clients to try at home. For our version all you will need is a flat brush, two bobby pins, hair-spray, and an iconic black headband. Enjoy the parties and Happy Holidays!

Behind The Scenes: “Runaway Bride”

Check out our video from the shoot “Runaway Bride” shot by our own stylist, and L’Oreal session stylist, Christopher Do.

The chosen stylists for the shoot were Emily Armand and Veronica Le, as well as make-up by Caitlyn Palmer.

Box Color VS. Professional Color

Walking down the hair-care aisle of the nearest CVS, I’m feeling a little overwhelmed. Be it that I am a professional (and very well-trained in professional hair color) I thought I could make and educated guess on which box color I would be using for this blog…I was wrong.

When I think of hair color, I think of semi, demi, and permanent. No where on this aisle was there a big flashing sign to help me determine the three. What I came across instead is the same thing millions of women and men come across each time they go to color their hair at home: a sea of boxes by multiple brands, all telling me that I can produce a perfect, multi-tonal, multi-faceted color at home.

BEFORE: Jennifer, our model.

But can I actually get the perfect color at home with just one box, one application?

Let’s just say for the sake of this blog that I am a consumer. My name is Jennifer and I have virgin hair. This means I’ve never colored my hair. Now let’s say, I have hair down to my chest, it’s relatively long. Assuming that one box will cover my length of hair, I purchase one kit. I start applying the color through my little applicator bottle from my roots all the way down to my ends. This is normal for me, as I am not educated in the process of applying color. Now, I let it sit for 45 minutes instead of the recommended 25 because I get side-tracked. Time’s up, I wash my hair, dry it, and look in the mirror…

AFTER: Jennifer’s self-colored results with a box color.

What does Jennifer’s hair look like? At first glance something is off. The roots are unnaturally flashy and brassy orange, and her ends are a dark copper brown. This is highly confusing. The box told her it would turn out a bronze golden brown.

With so many variables, it can be near impossible to get the results you want with one box. It’s very typical to need a corrective color by professional after dying your hair at home. We see it all the time. In fact, to correct Jennifer’s color, I had to add highlights to break up the inconsistent color, and darken the roots to make it look more natural.

AFTER: Jennifer’s hair professionally color corrected

Wedding Hair: Deciding the Salon for the Job

Every year millions of weddings take place in America. The typical wedding budget averages about $27,800 (www.TheKnot.com). Within that budget, it’s surprising that the last priority on the list is the wedding hair. Yes, we need to feed our guests, and most of the time we have the budget practically spent on the flowers and location, but are you really getting the most out of your money when it comes to your bridal party’s hair?

Consider your hair the icing on the cake, literally. Without it, the look just isn’t pulled together. When deciding which dress to wear on the big day one of the most important questions is which hairstyle will compliment not only your dress, but your style?

Will your dress be a halter? If so how high or low do you want your up-style? Would you rather wear it down and curled? Do you want your hair to have a romantic air, or do you want it tidy and worry-free? Will you want it out of your face so the photographer can capture priceless moments? This is how you will want your stylist to think and the questions you will want him/her to ask.

These are all the reasons and more M Salon wants to showcase our work. Our stylists train extensively to achieve all the looks a bride may want for their big day. We will be posting pictures from every shoot we do to excite our future Mrs, and prospective client.

Here are a few pictures from the collection “Runaway Bride”, a photo shoot our stylists Veronica, Chris, Caitlyn, and Emily did this past week on location in the historic Heights.
